Why I am running and humbly ask for your vote and the vote of your Penn State network:
Hi, I'm Greg Pilewicz and I'm excited to be running for Penn State's Board of Trustees. As a proud member of a four-generation Penn State family and lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association, my connection to this university runs deep. My wife and I cherish the bonds we've formed here. Our family has shared countless memories and experiences at Penn State. My time at Penn State was pivotal, shaping me both personally and professionally. It was here that I met my wife and formed lasting friendships that continue to enrich my life.
Professionally, I bring a wealth of experience as an executive leader, driving revenue growth and maximizing profitability across diverse business landscapes. I've successfully established and managed small start-ups and led significant Fortune 500 acquisitions. My expertise extends to mentoring leadership teams, fostering their development, and enhancing organizational performance. With a finance degree from Penn State's Smeal College of Business and my experience, I have a deep understanding of how strategic planning, and financial strength including credit, treasury, and budgeting influence an organization’s financial health.
I'm running for the Board of Trustees because I love my alma mater, believe in Penn State's mission, and want to contribute to its continued success. I am committed to being an independent and well-informed advocate for Penn State, ensuring it remains a world-class institution in education, research, and student life. I oppose routine tuition increases and capital projects that jeopardize the university's financial health. I also believe in maintaining strong governance and nurturing a team culture that supports effective decision-making by the board.
I see the need for a thorough evaluation of our Commonwealth Campus system to identify opportunities for improvement. Collaborative decision-making involving all stakeholders is essential to drive success for the university, faculty, staff, and most importantly, our students. My background equips me to make informed and timely decisions that align with these goals, fostering an environment where Penn State can thrive for generations to come.
I am enthusiastic about Penn State’s transformative journey to update its higher education model, focusing on five main strategic priorities: investing in its people, building future resources, fostering research excellence, enhancing academic achievement, and ensuring operational efficiency. I want to be part of the team that delivers on this transformation, leveraging my professional experience to make a meaningful contribution.
I am so proud of our achievements in athletics and enjoy cheering on our programs. Living in State College allows me to regularly attend games. Our success in athletics is a defining aspect of the experience for many students and alumni. We must invest to compete like never before. My personal connection through my sons’ D1 athletics experience at Penn State led me to engage with the university and specifically the hockey program. I recruited and lead the NIL advisory board for Penn State Hockey, working with former players and alumni who are now industry leaders. This experience will allow me to contribute productively to this priority as a board member.
Another area where I seek to make an impact is improving university relations with the Greek community and other social organizations. For many students and alumni, social affiliations are synonymous with their Penn State experience. These organizations are crucial to Penn State’s vibrant campus culture and enduring alumni connections with Penn State, including financial support. They foster personal growth, provide leadership opportunities, and give participants a strong sense of belonging. By engaging with these groups and ensuring open communication, the university can uplift these organizations, inspiring them to create safer and more inclusive environments.
Lastly, I feel the time is now to appropriately recognize Sue and Joe Paterno. We need to determine the proper way to celebrate their far-reaching legacy of giving to Penn State. Our university relies on the generous support of benefactors supporting the university financially and otherwise. Joe and Sue led this community by example. Joe, with Sue, was deeply committed to Penn State students' academic success. Sue continues to passionately give to the university and community. We need to acknowledge the depth of their impact in a meaningful way. "WE ARE because HE WAS."
These are just some of the reasons that I am excited by the prospect of serving on Penn State's Board of Trustees. I believe my experience aligns well with the current needs of Penn State and I will engage actively, given the opportunity.
